    Sporting Events in Las Vegas

Although known as the gambler’s Mecca and a hot spot for world-class entertainment, you won’t be disappointed in the Las Vegas sports scene! Las Vegas is one of the only large cities in America without a major sports team, but that does not mean that sports enthusiasts won’t love this vibrant city. In fact, for fans of many different sports, Las Vegas provides a wealth of exceptional attractions and sporting events. From bull riding, to racecar driving, to world famous boxing, Las Vegas is no slouch when it comes to sports.

Certainly, in the sport’s heyday, boxing made Las Vegas a world-renowned sports destination where celebrities of all kinds trekked to see big name boxers. Names like Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, George Foreman, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Leon Spinks, and more, put Las Vegas on the map.

Since that time, the city has opened up to many other sports that are once again making the city a place where gambling and sports go hand in hand. Now MMA, Ultimate Fighting, and WWE fill the hole for spectators looking to see a good fight.
Here is an overview of some of the top Las Vegas sports.

    Pro Sports

While there are no pro NBA, NFL, or MLB teams in Las Vegas, big league sports teams do spend time in Las Vegas including NBA and NHL annual events. The MLB holds its pre-season exhibition games in Las Vegas, which draws crowds of baseball fans each year. Cashman Field on the Vegas Strip hosts those games and is home to the 51s Pacific Coast League team.

Many minor league baseball teams work out in Las Vegas, but one of the biggest draws in pro sports to Las Vegas is the PGA Tour. Every October, the PGA Tour hosts the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at Summerlin on the outskirts of Las Vegas where top names in golf come to play.

With Nevada being a classic old western state, it makes sense that the rodeo is another one of the major Las Vegas sports, which includes bronco riding, lassoing, and bull riding. In fact, the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas is where the national rodeo finals are held. On top of that, the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) World Finals comes to the center in October to name the top bull rider in the world.

    College Sports

Las Vegas proves that you don’t need a professional sports team to be a sports town. In Las Vegas sports – from basketball, to baseball, to football – college sports are big in Las Vegas. Tops among the college teams are the Division 1 hometown heroes at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

Sporting events are also a big draw for college sports fans in Las Vegas. The city hosts the annual NCAA Las Vegas Bowl, which matches up the Mountain West Conference football champions with the Pac-12 champions. Also, the MWAC basketball teams hold their annual tournament in Las Vegas.

Whether you follow football, basketball, soccer, tennis, golf, or any other college sport, if it’s not played in Las Vegas, there is a bar somewhere with giant screens televising it.

    Racing

Televised races have built a growing following over the last decade in the U.S. Yet Las Vegas has always been a major hub for live racing sports. Top of the list is the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Some of racing’s biggest names have competed in this annual tournament.

At the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, NASCAR isn’t the only racing event that stops through the world-class racing venue. The NHRA holds their nationals there, as well as the Red Bull Air Race. Moreover, fans can get a taste of the action up close and personal topping 100 mph in exotic racing cars like Lamborghinis, Porsches, Corvettes, Aston Martins, and more.
